Twenty soldiers killed in explosion at army base in Cambodia

Twenty soldiers were killed in a major explosion at an army base in Cambodia. An unknown number of people were injured. An ammunition storage facility probably exploded.

Several buildings have been destroyed. Images show that the roof of a warehouse at the army base has been blown away. The area is littered with debris. According to the army, 25 civilian homes were also damaged.

According to a local resident, there was a heavy explosion in the middle of the afternoon, after which smaller explosions could be heard for an hour.

The base is located in the southwest of the country in the Kampong Spoe province, west of the capital Phnom Penh.

Prime Minister Hun Manet says he is deeply shocked by the news. He offers his condolences to the relatives and promises to pay for the funerals of the deceased soldiers.
