Prominent Ukrainian politician shot on the street in LVIV
Andri Paroebi, the former chairman of the Ukrainian parliament, was shot on the street this morning in LVIV. It seems to be a liquidation. The Ukrainian President Zensky speaks of a “terrible murder”.
The police are looking for the shooter. According to reports in Ukrainian media, the perpetrator rode an electric bicycle and pretended to be a delivery person. Paroebi is said to have been hit by bullets five times. He died on the spot on the sidewalk.
The motive for the deed is still unknown. Since the large -scale Russian invasion it has happened more often that Ukrainian politicians are murdered. The political past of Paroebi, a pronounced opponent of Moscow, made him a potential target for pro-Russian forces in Ukraine.
Maidan revolution
The 54-year-old Paroebi played a prominent role in the so-called Maidan revolution. He is considered one of the leaders of the protests that led to the fall of pro-Russian President Janukovysj in 2014. Since this revolution, Ukraine has been striving for joining the EU.
Paroebi held various top positions, including with National Security and Defense Council. He was secretary when the Russian army and pro-Russian separatists occupied Crimea and unleashed a war in the Donbas region. In this role, Paroebi was regularly the target of Russian propaganda and disinformation.
Between 2014 and 2016, the politician was deputy chairman of the parliament. Then he was the chairman for a few years. Paroebi was a member of the European Solidarity Party. “Andri was one of the founders of modern Ukraine,” writes the party on Facebook. “This is a terrorist act.”
