Podcast The day: High voltage after Alaska
Since the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, a comprehensive peace deal for Ukraine, including draconic requirements of Russia, has been sent. Trump wants Zensky to accept the deal. European leaders, who visit the White House together with Zensky, will try to ‘get Trump on their side again. But will that work?
“Trump’s patience is starting to get up,” says US correspondent Sjoerd den Daas, who was at the Alaska summit in Anchorage. He sketches in the podcast how the American president went there and with what mind he returned. It doesn’t promise much good for Ukraine.
Bob Deen, Ukraine expert from Institute Clingendael, is also very concerned. He tells in this podcast what is now known about what has been discussed with the Russians, including requirements about territory and safety guarantees.
Putin seems to have successfully driven a wedge between the US and Ukraine, says Deen, so Trump started to see the Ukrainian president as a crossbar. The ‘Article 5-like security guarantee’ that special envoy Steve Witkoff now talks about, he calls “vague” and therefore also dangerous.
