Myanmar announces date for first elections, west critically
For the first time since the military coup, four years ago, Myanmar announced elections. The first round starts on December 28, reports the state television. The dates for the following phases are not yet known.
Western countries were previously critical of the plans for elections. Opposition parties are excluded from participating or refusing to participate. That is why the elections are dismissed by the Western countries as an attempt to strengthen the power of the junta.
