Thousands of supporters are calling on Prime Minister Sánchez in Madrid to stay in office

Thousands of supporters of the Spanish Socialist Party have expressed support for their party colleague Prime Minister Sánchez in Madrid. They want him to stay on.

Sánchez resigned from his duties on Wednesday to reflect on whether he still wants to be prime minister. Earlier that day, a court authorized a corruption investigation into his wife. An extreme right-wing action group had filed a complaint against her. According to Sánchez, his wife is innocent. He spoke of an “unprecedented attack” by right-wing political opponents and will take until Monday to consider his position.

Buses from all over Spain

The top of the Socialist Party met today at the party office in Madrid. Deputy Prime Minister Montero asked Sánchez, who has been Prime Minister of Spain since 2018, to stay on. An estimated 12,500 party members and supporters took part in the outdoor demonstration. They had come to the capital by bus from all over Spain.

Opposition leader Feijóo of the conservative Popular Party said today that Spaniards should not be misled. His party had a poll done. It appears that 54 percent of Spaniards think that the Prime Minister’s ‘period of reflection’ serves a political purpose: to gain support for his Socialist Party in connection with the elections in Catalonia in May and those in the European Union in June.
