Death toll from Kenya floods rises to at least 70

In Kenya, the death toll from recent floods has risen to at least 70, a government spokesperson has said. At the beginning of this week there was talk of 35 deaths.

The East African country has been struggling with heavy rain and serious flooding for weeks. The rain has a particularly serious impact in the densely populated slums of the capital Nairobi, where millions of people live.

The natural disaster has washed away thousands of houses, made roads impassable and destroyed bridges. Heavy rainfall is expected again in Kenya this weekend. The government has set up a crisis center and is calling on people to move to higher ground.

Other countries in East Africa are also struggling with flooding. In Tanzania, which borders Kenya, more than 155 people have died as a result. In Burundi, 200,000 people have been affected by natural disasters.
