Death toll from floods in northern Afghanistan exceeds 300
The death toll from the floods in northern Afghanistan has risen to more than 300, reports the United Nations food organization, which provides aid in the area. They say thousands of homes have been destroyed.
Previously, the Afghan government, the Taliban, reported that there would be “hundreds dead”, many more injured and that dozens of people were still missing.
Afghanistan has recently been hit by heavy rainfall. The provinces of Baghlan, Badakhshan and Ghor in the north of the country are the worst affected. Thousands of homes are uninhabitable and many residents have nowhere to go. People gather at hospitals in the hope of finding their missing loved ones.
Images show how mud and water have flooded the roads. There are also violent images of deaths in the mud flows.
Every year, people die in Afghanistan due to heavy rains and floods, especially in places with poorly built houses. Now the situation in the country is even more serious, because the winter was relatively dry and the soil is struggling to absorb the water.
Afghanistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change, according to scientists, even though the country contributes only 0.06 percent of global emissions.
