British ambassador to Mexico leaves after pointing firearm at employee
The British ambassador to Mexico has been stripped of his post after pointing a semi-automatic firearm at an employee.
Images of the incident surfaced earlier this week. She put an anonymous X account online.
The short video shows Ambassador Jon Benjamin in a car pointing a large firearm at someone in the back seat. The video was allegedly made during a visit to the states of Durango and Sinaloa, which are plagued by drug violence.
The video is only 5 seconds long:
His resignation has not been officially announced by the Foreign Office and Benjamin himself does not respond to questions from journalists.
But his personal page states that he was ambassador between 2021 and this year, and his LinkedIn profile also states that he left his post in Mexico in May. Furthermore, it is no longer listed on the website of the British Embassy in Mexico.
According to the Financial Times, which first reported the news, Benjamin will continue to work for the British diplomatic service. Jon Benjamin is a seasoned diplomat. He was previously ambassador to Chile and consul in the US.
