‘Brazilian former president Bolsonaro spent two days in the Hungarian embassy’

The Brazilian former president Jair Bolsonaro spent two days in the Hungarian embassy in Brasilia last month. This is what The New York Times writes, which saw security images from the embassy.

Bolsonaro stayed there between February 12 and 14. A few days earlier, he had to surrender his passport due to an investigation into involvement in a possible coup attempt. Bolsonaro is said to have had plans, among other things, to pressure military leaders to join the coup and to arrest the Supreme Court judge. He refuses to testify in that case.

A lawyer for the 69-year-old Bolsonaro confirmed his stay at the Hungarian embassy. According to him, there was no “hiding”, but he was there “to get updates on the political landscape of both countries”. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked the Hungarian ambassador to the country for clarification.

These are images of Bolsonaro in the embassy, according to The New York Times:

Bolsonaro has maintained a good relationship with the radical right Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán for years. For example, he called him his “brother” during a visit in 2022. According to The New York Times, Bolsonaro’s stay at the embassy shows that he is using his friendship with the Hungarian prime minister to circumvent the Brazilian legal system.

In 2022, Bolsonaro lost the elections to left-wing President Lula. Shortly afterwards, his supporters stormed government buildings. In addition to the investigation into an alleged coup, Bolsonaro is also accused of fraud with vaccination data during the corona pandemic.

Last year, a Brazilian court ruled that Bolsonaro could no longer participate in Brazilian politics until 2030 because he spread disinformation in the run-up to the 2022 elections.
