Gang leader arrested in connection with the murder of Ecuador’s presidential candidate
A leader of one of the country’s largest criminal gangs has been arrested in Ecuador. He is said to have been involved in the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in August last year.
The arrested man is a leader of Los Lobos, a gang considered terrorist by Ecuadorian authorities. Twelve other gang members have also been arrested. In addition, $200,000 was seized, as well as several weapons and explosives.
Villavicencio was known as one of the fiercest fighters against corruption in Ecuador. He was already involved a lot as a journalist, and later also in politics. Last year he was shot dead after a campaign rally in the capital Quito.
A total of five suspects are now in custody for involvement in the murder of Villavicencio. Two other Los Lobos leaders are already in jail. They allegedly planned the attack.
A state of emergency is currently in effect in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian regime hopes to use this measure to round up 22 terrorist gangs in the near future.
