Gang leader ‘Barbecue’: ceasefire in Haiti possible if we have a say

In Haiti, Jimmy Cherizier, better known as the Barbecue gang leader, wants to have a say in the political future of the country. In return, he says he is considering a ceasefire. Cherizier said this in an interview with Sky News.

Cherizier heads the group of gangs that rule the capital. The country is experiencing a wave of violence, but Barbecue claims the crisis can be contained by working with the gangs.

“If the international community comes up with a detailed plan for joint consultations that does not impose anything on us, I think the weapons can be laid down.” The gang leader is referring to conversations about the future of Haiti and who will govern the country.

‘This is the only way’

Prime Minister Henry, who recently announced his resignation, will resign as soon as a new temporary Prime Minister has been appointed by a transitional council. In the run-up to the formation of this council, the gangs are trying to claim a place at the negotiating table. Barbecue: “The only way we can move forward is if we are involved in the peace process.”

Many residents of the country fear for their lives. Murder, rape and destruction are the order of the day. Gang violence has already claimed more than 1,500 lives this year, according to a UN report published on Thursday. 1.4 million people are at risk of famine as a result of the crisis.

Gangs have partially controlled the island for years, but violence escalated at the end of February. Several gangs joined forces and stormed prisons, among other things. It is estimated that around 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince is currently in the hands of gangs, led by Barbecue.
